It’s kind of a big day in the life of Kelly Brown. Lunch with a good friend, some cosmetic touches on the new blog, and a starting a new Bible study- Me Myself & Lies: A Thought-Closet makeover by Jennifer Rothschild. Come join me on this adventure as we fill our hearts and minds on spiritual truth.
Today was my first day of the study. I have never done a Rothschild study before. My previous book studies have in large part been Beth Moore, coupled with a Joe White study, and a couple of others that I can’t put a name on right now. After day 1 though, I would recommend it! I’ll give you my final review at the end of this seven week study.
Today’s devotion focuses on this idea of a thought-closet. Each word that we use conveys a thought. Some words are good while others are bad. Matthew 12: 34 says “The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart” (HCSB). Basically, our mouths reveal what’s in our hearts. Verse 35 goes on to say “A good man produces good things from his storeroom of good, and an evil man produces evil things from his storeroom of evil. According to Rothschild, The Greek word for storeroom is thesauros. The term thesaurus, used to describe a storeroom (collection) of words, is derived from this word. This begs us to ask the question, what kind of words do we have in our storeroom? Are they pure? These words, remember, come from the heart.
We often use these words to describe ourselves. In 10 words, how might you describe yourself? You would inevitably use some nouns to describe you- for me, that might be wife, sister, daughter, teacher, friend. But we would also likely use adjectives- things like kind, loyal, smart, funny. In all honestly it was kind of hard for me to write down words that I would use to describe myself. It also made me think though, “Are these the words that I want to be described as? Is this also what other would say about me?”
